Things That Make No Difference

I stood there holding the candle high—the battery-powered candle I bought at Lowes earlier that day. And there I was, holding up the little candle standing on the Douglas Avenue Bridge about dusk as the traffic passed, not sure anyone would even see the light of my candle, and thinking to myself: I guess this is one of those things I do that will make absolutely no difference in the world; actually this is one of the many things I do that probably make no difference whatsoever. Yet for some reason I do them anyway. And for some reason, here I am standing on a bridge holding up a candle for peace. Continue reading

Holy Humor Sunday (30 Aug. 2015)

Isaiah 55:12-13

Philippians 4:4

Holy Humor Sunday

You get out of the habit of chuckling at little things. You get out of the habit of the occasional guffaw. These are habits we should never have let go of.

Life is serious business. Sometimes we let the seriousness of life suppress our laughter. Or we let the turmoil take it from us. No matter what, we should never lose the ability to see the lighter side and to let out a laugh.

Unfortunately, Christians often have the reputation of being humor-impaired. Continue reading

Out of the Depths (9 Aug 2015)

Psalm 34:1-8

Out of the Depths

A lot of motorcycle shops are closed on Monday—which is my day off—and I took a vacation day on Tuesday of this week so I could get my motorcycle serviced in Kansas City. I rode up on Monday and rode back on Tuesday. As I listened to the radio Tuesday morning, they said rain in Wichita was virtually certain. Continue reading

John 6:24-35

Believe

We eat a lot of strawberries in the summer. If we have fresh strawberries on hand, I eat them everyday. Sometimes twice a day. You have to do that to get them all eaten before they start to spoil—especially if we have the larger container. There is no point in holding back. Just eat them to your heart’s content. Otherwise you’ll end up throwing some of them away in just a few short days. There is no downside Continue reading

Indivisible (5 July 2015)

Romans 12:9-21

Indivisible

A few years ago, a neighbor who lived down the street on University Avenue told me that when he was a professor at the University of Chicago back in the 60s during the Viet Nam War, the faculty of the university was so divided over U.S. involvement in that war that they could not even have faculty meetings to discuss the affairs of the school. The meetings just degenerated into out-of-control arguments about Viet Nam. So they decided Continue reading

Highs and Lows (14 June 2015)

Psalm 20

Highs and Lows

In 1970, Ray Stevens recorded a song that said, “Everything is beautiful in its own way. Like the starry summer night, or a snow-covered winter’s day. And everybody’s beautiful in their own way. Under God’s heaven, the world’s gonna find the way.”

To me, this was like a theme song for the decade about looking on the bright side, about seeing the beauty and the good all around us. About living in peace. This was a really great song—and if you ask me, it’s about time to bring it back.

In our day, Pharrell Williams recorded a song called, “Happy.” The song says, Continue reading

No one is bothered by the fact that Christians wear jewelry or quality clothing or that they fix their hair nicely–even though there is a verse in the Bible that says, Continue reading

Ephesians 4:11-16

Self-Directed Education

Julian of Norwich once said, “All shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.” Julian lived in the 1300s in England. I have always been drawn to this statement (all shall be well) for how positive and hopeful it is. The phrase awakens hope within me—and helps me remember how the gloominess of today is never the end of the story. The final chapter is not yet written. Continue reading

Seeing What Could Be

It’s a ubiquitous question. What I mean is that it gets asked a lot. Maybe not every week, or every month—but often enough: Continue reading
